POSCO Asian Fellowship is a scholarship program for fostering future leaders in Asia, providing promising young talents in Asia with the opportunity to complete master’s or doctoral program at leading graduate schools in Korea and to experience Korean social culture.

To improve the program, particularly this year the recruitment period was advanced two months from Mar to Jan to allow applicants to apply to graduate school with sufficient time by securing scholarship in advance through this fellowship, and great deal of talents have applied for the scholarship. From last year the selection process has been changed in a way that POSCO TJ Park Foundation and POSCO overseas corporations directly select scholarship students, and the number of scholarship students has been greatly expanded from 30 to 50.

As a result of recruiting applicants for 2020 Asia Fellowship from Jan 1 to 31, 456 talents from 30 countries applied, showing a fierce competition rate of 13 to 1. 81 candidates were selected for interview through the first process of screening applicants’ qualification and the second process of screening documents, and then 36 scholarship winners were selected through the third process of face-to-face or non-face-to-face interview by 11 POSCO overseas corporations and POSCO TJ Park Foundation.

In parallel with the direct selection by the foundation, from May this year 14 students recommended by four cooperative graduate schools: Seoul National University Graduate School of Public Administration; KDI School of Public Policy and Management; the Academy of Korean Studies; and POSTECH will be additionally selected, which means a total of 50 scholarship students will be supposed to be selected this year.

POSCO Asian Fellowship, which started in 2005, has provided learning opportunities to 417 Asian students from 32 countries. After graduation, graduates are growing as important leaders in various fields in their home countries, such as government officials and university professors, and employees to global companies and media companies. In addition, graduates formed POSCO alumni association in Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia, etc., making their success stories as POSCO global corporate citizens in each country.
