Mr. Lee Gwang-won, Ms. Kim Jeong-su, and Mr. Jeong Baek-gyo, who saved four people from a vehicle that crashed into the sea, were selected as POSCO Heroes. Also, Mr. Kang Dong-yeob rescued a child in danger of drowning and was selected as POSCO Heroes. The POSCO TJ Park Foundation delivered awards and scholarships on April 18, 2022.
On February 20, around 3pm, Mr. Lee, Ms. Kim, and Mr. Jeong were working at a sashimi restaurant near Namae Port in Yangyang-gun of Gangwon-do, and saw a vehicle crash into the sea with an engine blast and ran to the pier.
Mr. Lee jumped into the sea without hesitation as the fallen vehicle sank halfway into the water and tied it to the rear of car with the rope which threw by Ms. Kim and Mr. Jeong. To slow down the sink of the fallen vehicle, Ms. Kim and Mr. Jeong pulled the rope.
With Ms. Kim and Mr. Jeong, Mr. Lee rescued two occupants seating at front and one rear-seat passenger. Since three people came up to the ground, Mr. Lee thought he had rescued all occupants. However, he heard screams from the rescued that “there is one more occupant in the car”, Mr. Lee jumped back into the vehicle. The car was already submerged but Mr. Lee succeeded in rescuing the last occupant just before drowning by several dives.
“When I heard that there is still a person in the car, I don’t remember what I thought about jumping into the sea again. My body moved first.” Mr. Lee Gwang-won said.
During the rescue process, Mr. Lee suffered a finger abrasion, and Ms. Kim suffered severe injuries in the back of her foot.
Mr. Kang was selected as POSCO Hero along with above mentioned three people. On March 27, in cleaning the windows at a store, Mr. Kang saw a child floundering on the far of the sea with screaming and a child washed away by the waves. Mr. Kang immediately jumped in the sea to save a child.
Mr. Kang swam about 30 meters and quickly treated CPR to the unconscious child on a nearby rock, and the child slowly regained consciousness by spitting out water. A child was subsequently taken over by 911 paramedics and treated at the hospital.
“When I heard thank you from the father of the rescued child, it was dangerous but rewarding.” Mr. Kang said, “I'm glad the child is able to return to the family.”
