The POSCO TJ Park Foundation (Chairman Kim Sun-wook) held the 16th ‘2022 POSCO TJ Park Award’ ceremony on April 6 at the POSCO Center.
At the ceremony, awarded a plaque and 200 million KRW in prize money to the winners of this year's POSCO TJ Park Award as follows. Science Award: Nam Ki-tae, Professor of Materials Engineering at Seoul National University, Education Award: Yoo Hae-geun, president of Mongolian School in Korea, Community Development and Philanthropy Award: Jo Jin-kyung, Representative of the Center for Teenage Women's Rights, Technology Award: Cha Ki-cheol, CEO of InBody Co., Ltd.
Kim Sun-wook, chairman of the POSCO TJ Park Foundation, delivered the following welcoming remarks. “The POSCO TJ Park Foundation continuously discovers and supports those who are challenging the challenges facing our society and humanity with a creative and dedicated attitude and who are making ceaseless efforts and dedication to make the world a better place. We will devote ourselves to the path of making it more prosperous.”
Professor Nam Ki-tae of Seoul National University, who won the Science Award, succeeded in artificially realizing the world's first ‘Chiral’ structure that exists only in the natural world on metal, and is expected to develop new materials that will be used in various fields such as high-efficiency catalysts, 3D holograms, pharmaceuticals, and optics. In addition, the potential for developing environmentally friendly new materials that mimic plant photosynthesis, which is expected to play an important role in the realization of a carbon-neutral society, is also published successively in a global journal and is currently noted as one of the most influential researchers in materials engineering.
Based on the belief that “All of the children and young people have the right to an equal education,” Yoo Hae-geun, president of the Mongolian School in Korea, the recipient of the Education Award, established an educational environment in which the children of Mongolian migrant workers, who are in the blind spot of education, can grow into healthy members of society. In 2012, Cho Jin-kyung, the representative of the Center for Teenage Women's Rights, the winner of the Community Development and Philanthropy Award, established the "Center for Teenage Women's Rights", which is the first center in Korea to support youths who have been victims of sexual exploitation, and developed counselling and integration support for the rehabilitation of youths who have been victims of sexual exploitation. It has also made a key contribution to the process of becoming known in the world and the amendment of the Act on the Protection of Children and Adolescents from Sexual Exploitation in 2020, including the enactment of the Special Act on Prostitution in 2004, which calls for changes in our society's perception of prostitution, the enactment of laws for the protection of victims, the proposal of related policies, and the establishment of a support system.
Cha Ki-cheol, the CEO of In-Body Co., Ltd., who is the winner of the technology award, developed and commercialized an innovative technology to measure the amount of moisture per body part by sending fine electricity to the human body just by grasping the handle and analyze the detailed body components such as muscle mass, body fat, protein, minerals, and skeleton, and grew it into a health and medicine brand loved by the world. He was highly regarded as a ‘first mover’ who has dedicated his life to the development of body composition measurement technology and who has developed new customers and markets around the world and has grown the company into a global strong company.
Due to the impact of COVID-19, only a minimum of people, such as winners and POSCO TJ Award officials, attended the ceremony, however the entire ceremony was broadcast live through the YouTube channel so that many people could join the ceremony online.
