POSCO TJ Park Foundation announced the final 50 selections for the 2022 POSCO Asia Fellowship.

The 50 Asian scholarship students will be admitted to Korea’s graduate school master’s and doctoral programs next year. The foundation will provide them with full tuition and living expenses of KRW 1 million per month for up to three years.

Until last year, the foundation selected some Asian scholarship students through recommendation of its partner universities. However, starting this year, and the foundation carried out the entire scholarship selection process in collaboration with the POSCO Group’s local subsidiaries in Asia. In particular, in order to select excellent students, the foundation promoted this scholarship program in cooperation with POSCO Group’s overseas subsidiaries for about one month by using social network services such as Facebook and YouTube, which are mainly used by the young generation, and the scholarship student networks in each country.

As a result of recruiting candidates for a month from May 1 to 31, 2021, a total of 2,027 outstanding students from 31 countries applied for this scholarship program, showing a fierce competition of about 40 to 1. From this year, POSCO TJpark Foundation selected all students by directly, rather than university recommendation and direct selection combined. Through this process the number of applicants increased by 450% compared to that of applicants last year. Therefore, it is evaluated that the direct selection process has been successfully settled.

The foundation selected 140 candidates for the interview through document screening of 2,027 applicants. With consideration for the spread of COVID-19, a non-face-to-face online interview was conducted by the foundation and POSCO Group’s overseas subsidiaries located in 11 countries. After the final screening, the foundation selected 50 outstanding students as the final candidates.

This year, the foundation has changed the recruitment period from January to May to give candidates sufficient time to prepare for the desired graduate school they want to apply. The foundation also has expanded scope of support for scholarship students with the aim of being the best among similar fellowships in Korea. For example, the foundation has expanded the period of tuition support for selected scholarship students from 2 years to 3 years depending on the degree program. To help the selected students settle down in Korea, the foundation will also support the cost of their initial settlement in Korea and provide an online Korean language training program in collaboration with the King Sejong Institute before they enter Korea.

Started in 2005, the POSCO Asia Fellowship Program has been serving as one of the main project of the POSCO TJ Park Foundation and has been providing learning opportunities to 445 Asian students from 32 countries. Most of the graduates supported by the fellowship are working as key leaders in their home countries, such as working not only as government officials or university professors but also for global corporations and media outlets. The foundation also organizes and operates POSCO alumni associations in Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia, helping excellent students to create success stories as global corporate citizens in each country.

Foundation consistently tries to develop various programs enrich fellows life while studying in Korea. At the same time after studying in Korea, Foundation hopes its fellows to get to know and many good memories about POSCO Group and Korea.
