Lee Myeong-hee, who saved three citizens at the accident site, was selected as “POSCO Heroes”

POSCO TJ Park Foundation (Chairman Kim Sunuk Kim) selected Lee Myeong-hee as 'POSCO Heroes', who risked his life at the scene of a chain collision accident on the highway near Gonjinam IC in Gyeonggi-do to extinguish a blaze and rescue passengers. On Jan 26, POSCO TJ Park Foundation delivered and a scholarship to Daedeok Fire Station in Daejeon.

 

Lee Myung-hee, who was selected as POSCO Heroes, witnessed a traffic accident in which a passenger car, a truck, and a SUV collided on a highway near Gonjinam IC in Gyeonggi-do while transferring freight to Seoul on Jan 13 afternoon.

 

In a touch and go situation where flames were soaring from the passenger car, Lee extinguished the blaze with a fire extinguisher to prevent the flame from spreading to other vehicles. As the flame were not easily controlled, he smashed the windshield with a hammer to rescue the passengers of the overturned truck. He rescued one passenger in the passenger seat first, but he could not get the driver out of the truck easily.

 

Lee was injured on the face because of broken glass during rescue effort, but he protected the driver by wiping off the oil from that had flowed from the accident vehicle into the road before a fire truck arrived to prevent the flames from being spread to the accident truck. Fortunately, the flame spread was prevented and the truck driver was safely rescued by firefighters.

 

An official of the POSCO TJ Park said, “Mr. Lee Myung-hee, at the fiery scene of a traffic accident, risked his life to extinguish a blaze and rescue passengers. His sacrificial spirit and sense of mission became a model for our society, so we selected him as POSCO Heroes.”

 

“I would like to express my gratitude to POSCO TJ Park Foundation for striving to create a social atmosphere where the exemplary activities of citizens are encouraged,” Kim Tae-yeop (Head of the Daejeon Fire Department Headquarters) said. “I hope that this event would be meant to increase number of citizen heroes and raise social interest in righteous behaviors.” 

 

POSCO Heroes Fellowship, a project aimed to practice POSCO's management philosophy 'Corporate Citizen', supports the righteous who sacrificed themselves for the sake of national and social justice or their children so that they can continue their studies in a stable manner.

 

POSCO TJ Park Foundation has selected a total of 26 POSCO Heroes up till now since having embarked on the POSCO Heroes Fellowship project in 2019 to raise social interest in righteous behaviors by actively discovering public officials and citizens who can be models for our society, and to create a just society where members of our society can help each other even in difficult situations.
