POSCO TJ Park Foundation (President Sun-uk Kim) selected 3 citizens who jumped into the sea to save little children from drowning in the sea at Pyoseon Beach in Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do as POSCO Heroes, and presented plaques and scholarships at Seogwipo City Hall on October 28.
Two siblings at 6 years and 8 years of age, who were spending time at the beach with their mother, were swept away by the waves and disappeared under the water around noon on October 13, and 3 citizens (Kyungsu Park (48), Juhyeon Lim (50), Cheolwoo Kang (58)) jumped into the ocean to save the siblings.
Traveling from Busan on a business trip, Kyungsu Park stopped by the beach before the flight departure, and did not hesitate to remove his clothes and jumped into the ocean when little children were suddenly swept away by the waves. Park lifted A (8 years) and successfully saved her even when the depth of ocean was 2 meters and he could not reach the bottom.
Juhyeon Lim, who stopped by the beach situation room and witnessed the accident, and Cheolwoo Kang, who were running a restaurant nearby, jumped into the ocean with a rescue tube and flippers to save another child, B (6 years). When they brought him out of the water, he lost consciousness and was not breathing, so they pulled him onto the rescue tube and constantly performed CPR until they reached the beach.
The area where the siblings drowned is known as ‘Rock of Crow’, and accidents frequently happen in this area because of the sudden water level change a few steps into the water.
Mayor Taeyeob Kim of Seogwipo who attended the ceremony stated that “the three heroes ran a risk and saved precious lives,” and “I hope this kind of spirit of sacrifice spreads throughout the society.”
The 3 heroes stated that they “felt so relieved to hear that the child recovered consciousness”, and “many citizens nearby saved the children altogether with one heart.”
POSCO Heroes supports heroes who dedicate themselves for the country and social justice, or their children to continue the education stably. It was established in 2019 to improve social interest in righteous acts by discovering government officials or regular citizens who set an example in the society, and create a righteous society where the members help each other in difficult situations, and 17 POSCO Heroes have been selected so far.
