On July 17, the POSCO TJ Park Foundation recognized four citizens as POSCO Heroes for their courageous and cooperative efforts in rescuing a citizen in danger during record-breaking heavy rainfall in Sotae-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju. Each of the honorees received a plaque and a monetary award.

The four citizens— Choi Seung-il (49), Kim In-jung (44), Jung Soo-yeon (50), and Lee Jang-bok (32) — are neighbors who live and work near a local shopping district. During the torrential downpour, a nearby riverbank collapsed, sending a powerful current surging into the streets. Amid the chaos, they discovered a senior citizen trapped with their leg stuck between gaps in the road, unable to escape and at high risk of drowning. Acting without hesitation, the four joined forces to carry out the rescue.

Mr. Choi Seung-il was the first to plunge into the floodwaters. He was soon joined by Mr. Kim, Ms. Jung, and Mr. Lee, who used a wooden board to redirect the flow of water and tools borrowed from a nearby workshop to free the trapped leg. During the rescue, a vehicle was swept toward them by the current, putting all four at serious risk. However, they managed to stop the car and continue their efforts. After approximately 20 minutes, the citizen was safely rescued, thanks to their calm, coordinated, and brave actions — which proved decisive in saving a life.
Reflecting on the experience, Mr. Choi said, “The current was so strong that I knew I was putting myself at risk, but all I could think about was saving that person. I’m truly grateful to my neighbors who worked alongside me.”
Established in 2019, the POSCO Heroes Fellowship honors ordinary citizens who serve as role models in society through acts of bravery and altruism. Through this program, the POSCO TJ Park Foundation aims to raise public awareness about the importance of righteous action and foster a more compassionate and just society where people help one another in times of need.
