The Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST), the nation’s leading academy of distinguished scientists and engineers, has elected 29 outstanding young researchers as new members of the Young Korean Academy of Science and Technology (YKAST). Among them, eight POSCO Science Fellows were selected, accounting for approximately one-third of the newly elected YKAST members, marking a notable achievement.
Established in 2017 under KAST, YKAST is Korea’s only young academy dedicated to recognizing exceptional scientists under the age of 43 who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievements. The selection process places particular emphasis on the originality and impact of independent research conducted in Korea after the completion of a doctoral degree.
This year’s newly elected members have an average age of 39.8, and include a distinguished group of next-generation star scientists, such as Professor Kyung-Soo Choi of the Korea Institute for Advanced Study, a POSCO Science Fellow recognized for his outstanding contributions to differential equations research. Jin-Ho Chung, President of KAST, stated, “The 29 young scientists elected this year are researchers who will lead future innovation in Korean science and technology,” adding, “KAST will actively support YKAST activities to foster a free and challenging research culture for young scientists and to strengthen international research networks.”
Below, we highlight the major achievements of the eight POSCO Science Fellows elected as members of the Young Korean Academy of Science and Technology (YKAST).

The POSCO Science Fellowship is a flagship program of the POSCO TJ Park Foundation dedicated to identifying and supporting promising early-career scientists in Korea. Since its launch in 2009, the program has selected a total of 543 outstanding researchers in the fields of basic and applied sciences, providing KRW 36.4 billion in research funding and making a significant contribution to the creation of a stable and supportive research environment. The POSCO TJ Park Foundation will continue to encourage and support science and technology talents who will lead Korea’s future.
