"Organization of migrant workers support system.
Mr. Kim who was born into a Christian family started to help the urban poor with the church from December 1980."
As the number of Korean-Chinese and migrant workers entering Korea increased from 1990, he endeavored to solve the legal, institutional and humanitarian problems related to migrant workers. He has also greatly contributed to enhancing the image of Korea by establishing and running a migrant workers support center and a free clinic only for migrant workers.
In the 90s Mr. Kim witnessed a migrant worker dying of tetanus after being pricked by a nail at a construction site because he could not go to a hospital.
Heartbroken at the reality of how these people suffer greatly due to such a trivial incident, he did not spare any efforts in advising migrant workers and immigrants on labor related issues. Upon hearing the news, many migrant workers and immigrants kept asking for help.
Therefore, he decided to provide systematic support to these people and established Global Love & Sharing in April 2000.
He particularly focused on helping migrant workers injured at workplaces with medical bills and providing various relevant administrative supports.
In July 2004, he founded a free clinic for only migrant workers, and a migrant worker support center with the support of the Ministry of Labor to provide support to and solve the problems of workers from Asian countries.
Mr. Kim was awarded an Order of Civil Merit and the Sri Lanka Presidential Award for his efforts in supporting migrants, and was selected as one of 100 future leaders of Korea by manor domestic media. Mr. Kim is also establishing a Multi-cultural international school (to open in March 2010) to help with child education, which is the biggest concern for migrant worker women, and he is also planning to upgrade the free clinic for migrant workers to a free hospital.
Mr. Kim's philanthropic spirit of alleviating the suffering of those in need will become a valuable example renewing our recognition of multi-cultural families and migrant workers.
