A Special School Nurturing the Dreams and Talents of Students with Disabilities Through Customized Special Education

Pohang Myeongdo School, recipient of the Education Award, was established in 1989 and has been dedicated to developing and implementing customized educational programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.

In 2013, the school founded Korea’s first orchestra composed entirely of students with developmental disabilities, providing students with opportunities to discover and cultivate their musical talents and artistic potential. The school has also strengthened its physical education programs by offering systematic and professional training in weightlifting, volleyball, and athletics, enabling its students to achieve outstanding results at national competitions for athletes with disabilities year after year.

Furthermore, Pohang Myeongdo School has emerged as a leader in digital education by incorporating advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), into its curriculum. Through personalized, technology-enhanced learning programs, students have demonstrated exceptional performance in numerous digital skills and technology competitions.

The school has also established a school enterprise in collaboration with local industry partners in the Pohang region, providing students with practical, workplace-based training opportunities. Through vocational programs in areas such as career experience services, café operations, contract manufacturing, and cleaning services, students gain valuable hands-on experience and job skills, leading to successful employment outcomes.

Through its innovative educational practices, comprehensive vocational training, and commitment to empowering students with disabilities, Pohang Myeongdo School continues to serve as a leading model of special education and inclusive workforce development in Korea.
